Like any other national parks in Africa or anywhere else, before anyone visits or books a safari, the question will be, is the park worth visiting? The Amboseli National Park is in Kenya but on the southern border of with Tanzania. It is therefore possible that you can visit this national park while on a safari in Tanzania.
What is Amboseli Like?
Amboseli is a word coined from English to mean a salty and dry place. This place however has some swampy areas and streams that flow from the Kilimanjaro ranges. These streams and swamps attract a lot of elephants and a lot of birds.
Because the area is a bit dry and salty, there are areas that are forested near that swamps and streams. These areas have been fenced off to prevent the elephants from eating everything off. The swampy areas usually become a temporary lake in the long wet season of March to Mid June. There have been about 400 birds recorded here. The park is really small and is easily patrolled and therefore it is safe.
The small area that the park covers makes it a great experience for safari goers as it allows you to see everything in just two days. The park is just a short drive from Nairobi, it’s about an hour.
Which Animals Will I See in Amboseli?
The Amboseli national park is really small but with great animal population. Due to the streams form the Kilimanjaro, you will see a lot of mammals in the area the most common ones being the elephants. This park also has the Elephant research center.
The Amboseli National park is also home to the Baboon Research center. You will be intrigued at how these primates are very intelligent.
There is no guarantee of the big 5 but you will go into this national park with chances of spotting all of them. There has however been no sighting of the Leopards and Rhinos in recent history.
The animals that you are almost certain to see will b the Lions, Giraffes, Buffalo, Cheetah, foxes, a lot of birds (about 400 species recorded here), spotted hyenas, Thompson’s gazelle, impalas, zebras and non migrating Wildebeests.
Will I See Kilimanjaro?
The Victoria Falls of Zimbabwe are best see from the Zambian side of the Boarder. This is a common thing since Africans used such features to mark their borders. The tallest mountain in the world is no exception. It’s located in Tanzania but if one wants to see it clearly, they can do this from Amboseli National Park in Kenya. You will see the mountain clearly in the morning before your game drive.
