The Gol Mountains of Tanzania – An ancestral home of the famous Maasai people

The Gol Mountains provides a great walking holiday experience that’s takes you through the forests and the craters and hills. It’s above the escarpment of the Tanzania Great Rift Valley.

While on the Gol Mountains, you will have beautiful views of the Ngorongoro Crater and a greater insight of the Empakai cater which is a UNESCO world heritage site.

You can spend a minimum of two days here and the first two days can be spent while exploring the savanna hills and the famous craters.

The Gol Mountains are about 915 meters above sea level. They are covered in plains that have short grass. The Gol Mountains are located along the Ngoro Ngoro area on the Northern Edge.

These mountain ranges are made up of several ridges. Several scientists have asserted that these ridges have characteristics of some of the oldest geological structures that have existed for over one million years.

There are several herbivorous animals in the Gol Mountains due to the short grass in the plains. The area receives good amounts of rain. The rainy season runs from March to June and October to November. The rest of the months are dry.

The Gol Mountains are an ancestral home of the famous Masai people. These mountains have fertile soils that facilitate the growth of grass on the plains that attracted the masai people to this area since they are pastoralists.

The area is also on the boundaries of the Serengeti and Ngorongoro conservation Areas. The Plains also facilitate the migration of Animals from Serengati to Masai Mara in Kenya and Back.

The Gol Mountains also have an option of hiking the Oldonyo Lengai which stands at about 2878m above sea level. When you reach the summit, you can descend to the bottom of the Great Rift Valley into Lake Manyara National Park.

Best time to Visit the Gol Mountains

The Gol Mountains can be visited any time of the year but its best to visit during the dry months rather than the wet months. The wet months run from March to June and October to November.

These months have a lot of rains and the place could be slippery and have impassable roads. The rest of the months, December to February and July to September are dry months and usually have little rain.

This is however no conclusive and rain can fall at any time of the year given that this is a tropical rainforest. Consult your operator to help you choose the best time for your trip since they are on ground and keep track of the weather.
