Traditional Masai Experiences

Adumu is the traditional dance of the Masai. This dance is used to celebrate young men coming of age. The dance will involve a lot of jumping.

The word “Adumu” is a Masai word to mean jump and in this perspective it is used to mean jumping up and down.

The warriors will make a circle and a few people will enter the circle and just keep jumping for a while before they go back to the circle for another group to join in.

This is how this dance is performed. You are required to jump up and down but while maintaining the stiff posture.

One of the details is that you will not let your heals touch the ground. The members that are in the circles will make sounds and raise the pitch of the sound depending on the height at with the people in the middle raise.

The women especially the wives and girlfriends of the worries will position and dress in intricate wear to also get involves in the celebrations.

It’s the mother to the warriors that will do the singing and pay tribute to their sons for their courageous acts. The Masai are a boarder community and they live both in Northern Tanzania and southern Kenya.

The type style of the Masai has been praised by many people and recently Oxfam stated that the life style of the Masai should be embraced globally.

The Masai have a unique way they adapt to living in the desert area yet they are cattle keepers. They also do some farming. They are very hospitable people and thy well come very many people into the community.

One of the unique things to look out for is this dance. They have many other aspects of their lives that are really interesting like their attire and the way they eat cattle blood and the process of harvesting it without necessarily killing the cows.

The Dance is part of the bigger Eunoto festival that lasts about 10 days.

This 10 day festival of young men who perform all the rites to becoming men and Masai warrior. warriors. Eunoto is just one of many Masai ceremonies, performed for different occasions, especially to denote someone’s passage from one life stage to another.

Eunoto is a boy’s transition into adulthood, and after this successfully passed ritual they become senior warriors and are now allowed to choose wives.
