Lake Manyara National Park is located in the Arusha area of Tanzania. It derives its name from Lake Manyara which is at the center of this national park.
The Lake covers an area of about 230 Square Kilometers and this covers more than three quarters of the total area of the National park.
Lake Manyara National park was first gazzetted in the year 1960 and it is home to very beautiful landscapes that are a mixture of rocks, plains and Valleys.
This national park is known for being home to Flamingoes and tree climbing lions. It also has a large concentration of elephants.

Wildlife in Lake Manyara
This national park is home to the Lake Manyara which is a soda late. The ecosystem also has equatorial forest, woodland, and savanna vegetation.
The waters in Lake Manyara are alkaline waters but animals are forced to drink them in the dry season since all the other sources dry up
Other than the Lake and the big herd of elephants, this National park is also known of the rare tree climbing lions.
The lions here climb tree more often than the ones in Serengeti and Ngoro Ngoro National parks.
The park is also home to hot springs that are found at a point where the two rivers of Mto wa Mbu River and the Endabash River bisect from.
Lake Manyara is home to over 380 bird species that have been recorded here. Of course other animals include Antelopes, Hippos, Rhinos, Baboons, Leopards and Cheetahs.
Getting to Lake Manyara
The most common way of getting to Lake Manyara National park is by road via the city of Arusha. You can arrive in Tanzania via the Kilimanjaro Airport and then drive to Arusha.
It’s about 125km for Arusha to Lake Manyara National Park which is about 2 hours drive. The road is well tarmacked.
There is an option of flying into the airstrip at Lake Manyara National park which is a flight of about 40mins from Kilimanjaro International Airport.
When to visit Lake Manyara?
Lake Manyara national park can visited any time of the year but it’s advised that one visits during the two spells of the dry season.
The dry seasons come in the months of Mid June to September and December to February.
During this time the animals also migrate to come closer to the water source which is the Lake Manyara.
The season to try and avoid is the one from March to Mid June and October to November.
This period is characterized by large volumes of rain and the place becomes so messy and saggy.
