The Little Penck Glacier of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania

The Little Penck glacier is also located on the Kilimanjaro in the Kilimanjaro National Park. It’s located on the western slopes of the Kilimanjaro Mountain.

The glacier used to extend to the Northern ice field but was detached in the year 1992. A sizeable but stagnant ice body remains near the 1912 historical terminal end of the glacier.

The Glacier is now vanished together with the Uhlig glaciers which at one point flanked the Little penck Glaciers to the south and the north.

What is the largest Glacier in Africa?

The Credner Glacier is not only the largest glacier on the Kilimanjaro but also in Africa. It is only second or compared to the Furtwangler Glacier.

Global warming and the Kilimanjaro glaciers

There have been a lot of glaciers that have disappeared in recent history especially those on the northern ice field sector. In the last decade, the size of most glaciers have reduced by almost 80%.

The amount of snow which is the reason the glaciers form has also reduced from the 1912 when studies on this mountain became formal.

It is believed that if the glaciers melt at the same rate, we shall have none of them at the summit of the Kilimanjaro by 2030

African Glaciers Melting

There has been a general decrease in the number and size of glacier in Africa and this has been attributed to the effects of global warming and the melting of these glaciers has also cause a lot of flooding especially in Eastern Africa.

How Many Glaciers are in Africa?

There are only three countries in Africa that have glacier and it is a unique occurrence since they are not expected to be in the equatorial region.

Glaciers can be found on mountains Kenya, Kilimanjaro, and the Ruwenzori which are found in Kenya, Tanzania and Kenya Respectively.

Best Time to Hike the Kilimanjaro

If you are thinking about trekking the highest mountain ranges in Africa or have you have already booked your Tanzania safari to Kilimanjaro? The most common thing will be what’s the best time to visit and the other terms and conditions for the hike.

It’s possible that you can trek the Kilimanjaro any time throughout the year but some months are covered in cold weather and rains and snow especially the top and yet some are dry and a lot more favorable.

Its best advised to hike the Kilimanjaro is between the months of December to February and Mid June to September. Ideally these are the dry months but even then, sometimes it can and gets a bit messy.

It is however believed that a day of rain may not be as bad as rain that comes in a season and rains on a daily. But even the months that are considered to be cold or wet may not necessarily be so ad they can even go weeks without any rain.

The wet months are March to Mid June and October to November.

The dry months are also the most crowded; the mountain can be filed with tourist and for people that have intent to explore extensively, you may need to reconsider.
