There are accommodation facilities here and a lot of activities that you can partake in.
The Makoa Farm
This is a one stop area where you can hike, swim and enjoy you day other than the Kilimanjaro yet in the same area with the mountain.
The farm was founded in the year 1901. The Makoa farm is located at an altitude of about 1,070 meters above sea level. The farm covers an area of about 143 hectares.
The farm still has a lot of structures from the colonial times.
From the year 1999, this farm has been under the management of a veterinarian couple of German-Hungarian origin, Laszlo and Elisabeth.
You can use this farm as a base to explore the surroundings of the southern base of the Kilimanjaro Mountain. The farm has four luxurious accommodation cottages that give you great views of the Kilimanjaro.
The cottages have since the takeover been renovated but left with a little touch of the 1901.
The hosts have a group of vets that will host several wild life animals for treatment and you can have a chance to interact with some of these animals.
For this interested in doing a hike that starts here and ends at the Makoa River, the journey will begin at about 10 am.
While on the hike you will usually be accompanied by two black-headed sheep (Suzi and Lieve) and the two donkeys Pina and Fridolin.
The black and white colubus monkeys are some of the species you will meet. They are very intelligent species of primates and they will fascinate you.
It will take you about 2 hours to get to the Makoa River. You will get here at around mid day and you will have your rest before you make your return journey.
You can have a picnic lunch here, take a swim or just sit and watch nature.
