The Mawenzi Tarn Campsite on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania

The camp derived it names from the closeness to the Tarn at the Mawenzi on the Kilimanjaro Mountain.  Mawenzi is the second highest peak of the Kilimanjaro and this camp is located at the base of this volcanic peak.

The camp is not a common name among the hikers of the Kilimanjaro and its rarely used.

The camp is common for hiker using the rongai trail to ascend onto the Kilimanjaro Mountain. It’s really a small camp.

Location of Mawenzi Tarn campsite

The camp is located on the lower part of the Mawenzi peaks and its among the few that are in a short distance to the Tarn on this peak.

The camp is strategically located to help hikers who are willing to trek the summit of the Kilimanjaro using the Mawenzi peak.

It’s the last camp before summiting to the top f the Kilimanjaro and there for it is located in the Alpine vegetation zone of the Kilimanjaro.

This area is humid and receives very little rain fall. It however receives some snow although it’s also scattered. The area is free of plant and animal life as none of them can survive these harsh conditions.

There are no insects or mosquitoes to worry about here.

The place is however rocky and filled with small rocked referred to as scree and this may make it hard to find where to pitch your tent more so when the place is full to capacity.

Mawenzi Tarn Accommodation & Toilets

There are no permanent structures in form of cabins or huts here and you will be expected to carry your own camping gear that you will pitch at the designated camping area.

There is only one semi permanent structure here which is the ranger’s hut which also serves as the administration block. There are not toilets here but rather pit latrines that you have to share with other hikers but they are safe and clean.

Unlike other camp site that is on a high altitude like the Mawenzi tarn camp, this camp has availability of water and you won’t have to worry about this.

There is a water source that comes from the Mawenzi Tarn; however this water is not safe for drinking. Therefore, make sure to carry your drinking water all the way through.

Mawenzi Tarn Hut to Kibo Hut Camp

There is about 8 Kilometer between the Mawezi tarn Camp and the Kibo hut camp. Mawezi Tarn camp stands at an elevation of about 4,310 meters above sea level while the Kibo huts camp is at an elevation of about 4,700 meters above sea level.

This journey will take you about 6 hours.
