Caused by the bite of an infected female anopheles’ mosquito, Malaria is a tropical disease which can be fatal if not treated promptly.
Can you get Malaria on Mt. Kilimanjaro?
No, you cannot because malaria is not a concern on Mt. Kilimanjaro as the mountain is too high and cold, conditions that do not favor the anopheles’ mosquito.
Mosquitoes thrive and survive in warm environments at lower altitudes, they are not found on the higher altitudes above 2,000 meters where you will spend most of the time on your ascent to the top of the mountain.
Nevertheless, malaria is prevalent in Tanzania, so necessary precaution has to be taken if you plan on visiting other tourist destinations like the national parks in Tanzania as it is considered one of the high-risk countries in Africa and the world at large.
Talk to a medical personnel or your doctor and know which type of anti-malarial you need and when you should start taking them. The earlier the better, so that the drug can be established in your body by the time you set foot in Tanzania.
Do not forget to pack your mosquito/insect repellent. You are advised to wear long sleeved shirts/t-shirts (lightweight for comfort throughout the day), trousers and sleep under a mosquito net in your rooms at your accommodation facilities.
