The Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big tree Camp) of Mount Kilimanjaro

The Mti Mkubwa Camp which also translates as the Big tree Camp is also known as the forest Camp. The Camp is located along the Lemosho Climbing trail on the Kilimanjaro Mountain. You can spend a night here and camp over night.

The camp derives its name from a Kiswahili Phrase Mti Mkubwa which means “big tree”. The camp is surrounded by the trees that make up the tropical rain forest.

The camp is the first accommodation you will meet from the base as you hike using the Lemosho trail. The can is located in the forested vegetation zone of the Kilimanjaro Mountain.

At this level you will see a lot of Lobelias, giant groundsel, colorful red pokers and Senecios trees. This area of the mountain mainly receives rain through the mist which usually covers the area without notice. The temperatures here of course will be below 0 degrees.

The camp is located under a very big tree and thus the name Big tree Camp/ Mti Mkubwa Camp. The camp is filled with bird sounds and primates playing in the canopy of the forests.

The camp can only be used by hikers ascending to the Kilimanjaro and cannot be used while descending. Hikers using this route will use a different route while descending.

Like most camps on the Kilimanjaro, this camp also uses tents as the only form of accommodation. There are no permanent structures and hikers will be expected to carry their own camping gear that they can mount in the camping area.

There is a semi permanent hut which is meant for the ranger and also doubles as the office. The camp does not have toilets but pit latrines.

Location of Mti Mkubwa campsite or Forest camp

The Camp is located in the middle of the tropical forest of the Kilimanjaro. It’s just about 3 hours from the Londorosi gate. The camp site is also located near the valley in this area.

When you get here, you will notice that trees were cleared to create space for this camp site since this is a forested area. It’s surrounded by a lot of huge trees. The Mti Mkubwa Camp is on the north west of the Kilimanjaro Mountain.

The camp as low traffic because the route here it’s located also has low traffic. There are very few hikers that fancy the northern routes. The cam is also relatively small due to these same factors.

The fact that it is located in the middle of the tropical rain forest, the camp receives a lot of rain fall and winds. The winds are blocked by the trees and that’s why the effect will be minimized.
