This camp like the name suggests is located on the Mweka trail. It can be call the Mweka Camp or the Mweka Hut Camp. It’s an accommodation facility for hikers who are descending form the Kilimanjaro Mountains as the Mweka route is only for descending.
This camp is the last one as you descent from the Kilimanjaro. The Mweka camp is used by about 5 out of the seven trails on the Northern circuit.
Some of these routes include Shira trail, Umbwe trail, Lemosh trail and Machame trail.
This camp is a preference for most hikers descending the Kilimanjaro as it is very close to the Mweka gate which they can use to exit.
The other option on the northern circuit routes is the Millennium Camp Site but this is a little further and if one isn’t fatigued then they can opt for this.
This camp site however is further away from the exit gate and it’s smaller in site in case you are in a large group
Mweka Camp Facilities
There is no permanent structure here. Therefore there re no cabins or huts here. You will be required to carry your own tent that you can pitch at the camping site.
There is one semi permanent structure which is the ranger’s hut which also acts as the administrative center of this camp where most of the formalities are done.
There is a cabin that was converted from the ranger’s accommodation recently.
Its wooden cabin. There are no toilets here but rather pit latrines that are safe for your usage although they are not like the toilets you are used to in Europe.
The camp is the last camp as you descend the Kilimanjaro on the Mweka route and it’s located in the forested vegetation Zone of the Kilimanjaro.
The camp is therefore in the middle of a dense forest. This makes it cooler than the previous camp that you will have come from.
The camp receives a lot of rain and you should be ready for such an occurrence any time of the day or year. It’s about 3 hours from the Camp to the exit gate of Mweka.
Millenium Camp to Mweka Gate
This camp is the last one before you reach the gate as you descent. It is approximately about 12 kilometers from the camp to the gate as you exit to the Mweka gate.
Mweka gate to Moshi Town
