The Ngorongoro Crater in Ngorongoro Conservation Area

How Was the Ngorongoro Crater Created?

The crater is believed to have been formed over 2 million years ago when the volcanic activity in this area was still active.

The cone that had formed later collapsed inwards.  It is this implosion that created the current Ngorongoro Crater that we see today.

What is a Caldera?

The word caldera comes from a Spanish word “Cauldron”. It means a ditch shaped like a bowl. It has a diameter of about 1 Kilometer.

A caldera is usually formed by volcanic activity I this particular case, the volcanic cone collapsed to form a ditch with steep slopes.

What is Unique about Ngorongoro Crater?

It is the biggest Caldera Lake in the world. Other than that, this Ngorongoro crater is a collection point for some for the largest mammals in Tanzania.

With such a collection of plants and animals, the area has a complete ecosystem of its own.

How Old is Ngorongoro Crater?

The Ngorongoro cater is believed to have been formed between two million and three million years ago.

What is Ngorongoro Crater Known For?

The fertile volcanic soils of the area facilitate the growth of a variety of Flora and Fauna which in turn attracts a lot of animals especially the mammals who have a great concentration here.

The other animals like the lions and Leopards also follow their prey here.

When is the Best Time to Visit Ngorongoro Crater?

The Ngorongoro crater can be visited anytime of the year. It is however advised that you visit this area in the dry month.

The dry season come in two phases which is in the months of December to February and Mid June to September.

The time to avoid would be the wet seasons of March to Mid June and October to November.

For people that would want to have the wilderness to themselves, it is advised that you visit during the wet season as there is always less traffic.
