The School Hut & Campsite on Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania

The School huts are located in the alpine region of the Kibo peak which is the tallest peak of the Kilimanjaro. They are usually used by the trekker of the Kilimanjaro using the northern routes.

These school huts are the last housing before making the last attempt to reach the summit of the Kilimanjaro.

The huts camp is located at an elevation of about 4,710 meters above sea level. The more direct route to this camp is the Rongai Trail, although most of the northern circuit routes can stay here the last night before the hike to the summit.

The routes in the north are however really long compared to those in the southern circuit and this camp is rarely used due to this fact as people will opt more for the southern trails.

It is however a very quiet place since there is less traffic. The camp area is also small.

This school camp is not well developed and only has pit latrines. You will have to carry your own tent for housing. There is water here is rain water tapped when it rains.

You may need to carry water in-case it’s a dry season.

Location

The camp is located in the Alpine vegetation zone of the Kilimanjaro. It’s in a few kilometers of the Kibo huts and it’s neighbored by the Reusch Crater in the east.

There is no vegetation around this camp and the oxygen level is low. You will not have to worry about insects and mosquitoes as there is barely any animal life that can survive here.

Third Cave to School Huts Camp

You will hike to the school huts camp on the seventh day if you are using the northern circuit routes. It takes about 5 hours from the third cave which is at an elevation of about 3,870 meters above sea level to the school huts camp which are at elevation of about 4,750 meters.

Journey from School Huts Camp to Uhuru Peak

You will begin your journey to the peak from the school hurt camp at around midnight such that you reach the summit by dawn.

You will hike form the elevation of the school huts which is about 4,750 meters above sea level to the peak which is at an elevation of about 5,895 meters above sea level.

You will spend some time at the peak and before the sun rays become too hot you will descent via the Mweka camp which is at an elevation of about 3,110 meters above sea level.
