The camp can be used while ascending up to the top of the Kilimanjaro. You will reach this camp on the second day of your hike in the afternoon. There are not huts and cabins or permanent accommodation structure here.
You will be required to carry your tent that you can pitch the camping area. The camp has just one semi permanent structure that is the ranger’s hut and also cats as the administrative offices here.
Shira 1 campsite Toilets
This campsite doesn’t have toilets. It only has pit latrines that are semi permanent and made of wood but safe or usage while here. You will have bathroom that have no showers and they are clean enough for you to use.
Location of Shira Camp One
The camp is located on the famous Shira Plateau on the western side of the Kilimanjaro Mountain. There are three other camps near this camp that bear a similar name. That is the Shira 2 Campsite, and Shira cave campsite.
The Shira Plateau
This area stretches for about 13km and is west of the Kilimanjaro Mountain. It’s about 3800 meters above sea level and is one of the world’s highest Plateaus.
This plateau is believed to have been formed about 500,000 years ago.
It is believed to have been a caldera that eroded over time to eventually form a plateau on the bases of a volcanic pit.
Why hike the Shira Plateau route
Unless you are an experienced hiker, you should avoid this trail for two major reasons. The route starts at about 3600 meters above sea level which is a high altitude for beginners.
This will not give you enough time to make your body used to the high altitude and you may get sick.
On another note, this route doesn’t go through the western forests of the Kilimanjaro Mountains which restricts you of these stunning views.
